Overview of event:

More than 90% of the residents in Joo Chiat constituency are living in private property; therefore we hope that these residents are able to reach out their hand to help the needy residents that are living in Joo Chiat constituency. These high income residents can do so by purchasing food rations pack from us and donate it to the low income residents. We also hope to increase the community bonding of the resident in Joo Chiat constituency.

This project is propose to held before lunar Chinese new year, the reason is to let disabled and the needy to feel that they are not left out during this important Chinese festival. This year project we will be including environmental, medical components and collaborate with annual Joo Chiat CCC Ang Bao distribution. We will be helping the needy resident to install water saving devices and energy saving light bulbs, this is to help them to lower the monthly utility bills. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) doctor will also be providing free medical consultation to the needy families.
As part of our the objective of this project, our volunteers are not only just giving but they are actually gaining experiences that are helpful for personal growth and we hope to cultivate compassion among them.

This project is jointly organized by Joo Chiat Citizens’ Consultative Committee and Joo Chiat Youth Executive Committee and the project will be divide 3 parts:

1. Wheel Chair Serving
2. Food Ration Distribution (To seek donation from Joo Chiat residents)
3. TCM consultation
4. Ang Bao distribution
5. Installation of water saving devices / energy saving light bulbs

Proposed activities

Wheelchair servicing
Wheelchair Servicing will be taken care by Mobility Aids Repair & Services Centre, a team of volunteers will also be helping out in wheelchair servicing where skills will be taught to the volunteers on how to repair wheelchairs.

Food Ration Distribution
We will be finding sponsors to donate the food ration. Volunteers are required to pre-pack the food items into different bags. After which, volunteers will be sending these bags to the needy elderly and families.

The committee is putting a maximum amount of $20 per ration bag and is encouraging Joo Chiat residents to purchase the ration bag and donate to the less-fortunate residents in Joo Chiat to promote community spirit of giving and helping one another!

TCM consultation
There will be collaborations between JC YEC and an external organization that provides free TCM consultation. (Singapore Buddhist Free Clinic, Chung Hwa Free Clinic etc) Mobile clinic or medical stations will be providing free TCM consultation

Ang Bao distribution
Joo Chiat CCC will distribute Ang Bao to the residents, together with the issuing of food ration bags.

Installation of water saving devices / energy saving light bulbs
YEC will be collaborating with ITE College East, ITE College East will be providing manpower & technical support for the installations of water & energy saving devices.

We hope to cultivate the understanding of energy and water resources saving to the residents, which in turn, will help them to save money in their monthly utilities bills.

Have you been to Joo Chiat before? Even so, have you ever explored the rich culture and heritage of Joo Chiat on a bicycle before? Well, the opportunity is here for all YOUths!!

Joo Chiat Community Club (CC) Youth Executive Committee (YEC) will be organising a mass Youth CycleAbout around Joo Chiat Constituency, in support of Singapore 2010 - Youth Olympic Games.

Immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of the constituency as you will be passing by some of the historical buildings that had been preserved by the National Heritage Board! It will be a day filled with adrenaline-pumping and fun activities - rest points / pit stops will be set up @ strategic locations to allow youths to further explore the different cultures that Joo Chiat has! To make it more interesting, questions centered on Olympics and the YOG will be prompted along the route to add hype to the whole cycling expedition.

NO registration fee! Rental of the bicycle and helmet is waived! Each participant will receive a free event singlet! Only 200 vacancies and on a first-come-first-serve basis only.

Lunch at Qian Xi Restaurant

In this contemporary society where people are busy with their own study/life/work etc, it's always hard to find a common time to have all family members to sit down and have a simple meal. It's even harder to have "inter-generational" dinner with your Grandparents and Grandchildren.

This event, organised by Geylang Serai, MacPherson and Joo Chiat FLCs (Family Life Champions), aims to address to the above-mentioned issue.

Lunch at Qian Xi Restaurant with Joo Chiat CC YEC members and volunteers. Started from 11am to 2pm. The event comprised of Talk about Maintenance of good family and friends tie by Fei Yue FSC, Performance by Ah gong and Ah ma - Ah GoGo dance, Singing by some the local talented residents, Wii Games and definitely not forgetting the lucky draws. The theme for today was Grandpa, Grandma and Me!

Our table was generously sponsored by Mr Willie Ho, Chairman of Joo Chiat CCMC, and we were lucky to have won a lucky draw prize.

EUP Event

The Joo Chiat Citizen Consultative Committee & Siglap South NC2 cordially invites you and your family to Estate Upgrading Programme Completion Ceremony on Sunday, 25 October 2009, at the Playground beside East Coast Terrace, starting from 2pm to 7pm

The Estate Upgrading Programme (EUP) seeks to provide the residents an improved quality of life by the enhanced walkways and greenery surrounding their estates. More than $8 million was spent to cover all the drains and a further $2.8 million was put into the EUP, bringing the entire budget to almost $11 million for the residents.

This Family-carnival Celebration will be hosted by celebrated media personality Ms Jamie Yeo.

There will be Face painting, Juggling, Bouncy castles, Candy Floss, Lokang Fishing, Caricature, Lucky Draws .....

There will also be Solo Violin performance, Jazz singing by Robert Fernando and Percussion Drummer

Light Snacks and Refreshments will also be provided.

President's Challenge 2009

The President’s Challenge is an annual series of community-based activities initiated by President S R Nathan in 2000 to promote a more cohesive society. The aims of the President’s Challenge are to increase awareness of the community, on how to be involved in helping the less fortunate and to raise funds for the social service sector.

The People’s Association, through its Grassroots Organisations (GROs) and Community Development Councils (CDCs) have been supporting the President’s Challenge Charity Drive since its inception.

With no exception, this year, a group of youths from Joo Chiat Community Club Youth Executive Committee decided to take on a booth at the annual President’s Challenge. Headed by our Chairperson Mr. Kenneth Wong, we created our booth “Pledge-a-smile”, in hope to receive generous donations from the public while they pledge their smiles for President’s Challenge 2009.

Preparations of our very own “Pledge-a-smile” booth had begun weeks before the actual event on the 29th of August. A few of our members grabbed their thinking caps to help design and decorate our booth. Though exhausted from the nights spent on the designing and all the preparations, the group of us were as excited as we could ever be, at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza on an early Saturday morning.

A terribly hot Saturday it might have been, however, the team spirit of Joo Chiat CC YEC and our 10 other volunteers was never burnt away. We were racing against time, as our goal was to take a total of 424 photographs to fill up the picture collage, made up of four different coloured hearts, for the Presidents Challenge. However, even after 4 hours since the official opening of the event, we had only managed to collect a total of 63 photographs. We got worried and anxious, but we never gave up.

Together with our volunteers, we strategised and work closely as a team, trying our very best to attract more people to come pledge their smile at our booth. While an increasing number of people came to our booth, our fellow photographers and volunteers were continuously taking pictures and printing them for our booth visitors and also for the collage.

Drained, we were by the end of the 14th hour at the event, we felt euphoric and a great sense of satisfaction as we pasted on the 424th picture on the collage at the very last second. We succeeded in achieving our goal!

As accounted by one of our very own volunteer, Nico Lee, he said: "Though this event was tiring, I believed that it was all worthwhile for the cause of charity and the spirit of giving. My volunteering time spent at President's Challenge 2009: Pledge-a-Smile was definitely meaningful and memorable, where I was able to contribute my little efforts in helping the less-fortunate. Moreover, I am glad that I was able to help them raise funds and hope that more of such meaningful events could be organised to help even more beneficiaries.

Thank you, Joo Chiat Youth Executive Committee!"

One of Joo Chiat CC YEC member, Brian Wong shares similar sentiments too. He commented: “It was a long and tiring day at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza on 29 August 2009. As a group, Joo Chiat CC YEC and our volunteers tried our very best to raise funds for our partnered beneficiary.

Exhausted we may have felt at the end of the day, it was most satisfying when we had managed to fill up our photo collage wall with the 424 photos that we took the whole day. After the whole event, I felt that we had put in all of our hard work and effort into the raising of funds for our beneficiary. Besides the money that we have raised that could help them in one way or another, it always feels great when we are given a chance to help others in need.”

On a final note, the Joo Chiat CC Youth Executive Committee would like to thank every volunteer, every participant and everyone who has made this event possible in a way or another. Without whom, the success of our very own “Pledge-a-smile” booth could not be achieved. We would also like to applaud our fellow photographers from Joo Chiat CC Photography Interest Group for their undying effort and support!

Objectives of Event:

1. To dissolve differences and create networks between all photographers.
2. To cultivate cultural appreciation through the art of Photography.
3. To allow the sharing of ideas and skills among photographers as a community.

Theme: Joo Chiat – “Our Peranakan Heritage”

Proposed Activities:

1. Photo Exhibition of individual works (Selection of top 30 photographs).
2. Large Scale Photography Competition in relation to the theme.
3. Presentation of photos cum prize presentation.

Joo Chiat – “Our Peranakan Heritage”: Through photography, photographers will be invited to showcase their skills and creativity by capturing a unique interpretation of the theme given for the photography competition. Top 30 photographs will be selected and displayed @ SMU Gallery during the festival.

Overview of the Photography Competition:

Photography is a hobby growing in popularity in recent years. It has spurred a rapidly growing interest among the youths today.

In Singapore there is increasing apathy among our youths towards Singapore’s political and cultural scenes. However, the number of youths who appreciate our country’s culture and symbols is far from many.

This project aims to achieve three goals. Firstly, it is to bring photographers together so as to, allow communication, dissolve any differences and also create new friendships between them. Secondly, it is to cultivate cultural appreciation through the art of photography. Thirdly, it is to catalyst the sharing of ideas and skills among photographers as a community.

Participation Details:

Theme:Joo Chiat – “Our Peranakan Heritage”

This photography competition will be hold in conjunction with the Peranakan Festival and the theme was chosen as it combines two important elements: Photography and Cultural Identity. With a strong sense of cultural identity, only then will people feel that they belong. This competition will give the participants an opportunity to see, feel and ultimately show the world what Singapore and her culture means to them.

Judging Criteria:

1. Relevancy to theme - The photos submitted must be relevant to the theme set.

2. Technical Competence - Composition, lighting and techniques used.

3. Creativity and Quality - The works displayed must exhibit certain level Creativity. Quality of the photographs taken will also be taken into consideration.

4. Quote/Caption/Title/Poems - The works displayed must be accompanied with phrase/quote/caption/title/poems to describe the photograph to help others understand what the photographer is trying to deliver.

Maximum words for each phrase/quote/caption/poem will be capped at 50 words.

Rules:

1. Participants can be of any ages. No restrictions, and they must be a Singapore citizen, a Permanent Resident, a foreign student or a non-student foreigner currently studying and/or residing in Singapore.

2. Participants must have in their possession a digital camera, which will be used during the event. Camera phones are not allowed.

3. All photographs submitted must be between the competition’s period (1 October – 7 November 2009). Entries must be composed of original, authentic, unpublished material and must be the sole property of the entrant.

4. Photos cannot be edited beyond exposure/contrast/saturation/ settings. The composition of the photo must not be edited. No digital manipulation is allowed. Cropping however is allowed.

5. Participants are required to develop and submit a maximum of 3 photographs (8R size) for the competition.

6. All entries should be submitted in the form of softcopy, email titled “Joo Chiat – “Our Peranakan Heritage” – Photography Competition” to joochiatyec@gmail.com. Closing date will be on 7th November 2009.

7. Participants are to name their photographs using the format “photoname-NRIC-(01/02/03 a.k.a photo number)”. E.g. “joochiathouses-S12345678C-01.jpg”. The photographs should be at least with minimum dimension of 2046 X 1028.

8. Participants are to submit a write-up of their photograph(s) in a form of Quote/Caption/Title/Poems to describe the photograph and let others know what the photographer trying to deliver. The write-up should be attached in the email, together with the photographs.

9. Top 30 photographs will be selected and displayed at Singapore Mangement University during the Peranakan Festival period.

9. It is compulsory for the winners to attend the closing ceremony on 6th December 2009 @ The Katong Village (Joo Chiat Area) in order for them to be eligible for the collection of prizes.

10. The Organiser is also looking the possibility of forming up an interest group – Photography Club to allow like-minded photographers to come together.

11. Winners of the competition will be invited to sit in the committee of the interest group to assist in running the interest group.

12. The Organiser is not responsible for any lost, late, misdirected, incomplete, or postage-due entries.

13. All photos’ rights will belong to the original author. However, credits will be given to the authors if the Organisers or Joo Chiat Community Club would like to publish any of the photographs.

Ms. Celine briefed the members on the OBM procedures as well as roles of the appointments. Ms Celine then proceeded to start the election process for the office bearers.

Open voting was selected by the members and in the event of a tie, a revote is conducted, if once again it is a tie, the returning officer shall commence with the pivot vote and the decision will ruled in favour of the returning officer.

About Joo Chiat YEC

The People’s Association Youth Movement (PAYM) was established in 1971. It caters to youths between the ages of 12 and 35, regardless of race, language or religion. With an exciting cohort of 210,000 youth members, the PAYM is one of the largest youth organisation in Singapore.

It comprises 101 youth groups that are based at Community Centres/Clubs (CCs).

Each youth group is managed by a Youth Executive Committee (YEC) comprising 15 to 30 members. The YECs are elected biennially from among its Youth Group members.

The YECs main roles are to:

1. Initiate programmes for its members and involve them to carry out its programmes and activities; and

2. Work closely with the grassroots organisations to implement community development projects for residents in their respective constituencies.

Joo Chiat Youth Group is a sub-group of Joo Chiat Community Club Management Committee. Currently, Joo Chiat YEC is at our 17^th Term of Office, with each term lasts for 2 years. At the end of the term, a Bi-annual General Meeting (BGM) will be called to elect a new committee to run the YEC for the next term.

Joo Chiat Youth Executive Committee organized such as Community-on-Wheel (CoW), SPIKE, Overseas Homestay Programme and local community service projects, just to name a few.
Some of the events that

ve Committee is run by a group of youths who are passionate in serving the community and making a difference to our society. It allows the youths to evolve a more bonded community by allowing them to work hand in hand for a common cause, a common goal and a common vision of a better integrated community.

BGM 2009-Reflection

11 July 2009 : Some 103 youth participants had packed the Joo Chiat Community Club (CC) Theatrette to attend the Youth Executive Committee (YEC) 17th Biennial General Meeting. YEC candidate Crystal Sng shared that, "I have never seen so many youths in a single event like this one before!".

21 candidates were elected into the committee for a 2-year term from 11 July 2009 to 11 July 2011. The event was graced by various YEC Chairpersons, senior Grassroots Leaders and invited guests. The event Guest of Honour was none other than Mr Chan Soo Sen, MP for Joo Chiat Constituency and Adviser to Joo Chiat GROs. Mr Tan Yew Beng, PBM (Chairman of Joo Chiat CCC), Mr Willie Ho (Chairman of Joo Chiat CCMC) and Senior Constituency Manager, Ms Leong Hui Hui were all present too.

In the opening address by our outgoing YEC Chairman Mr Kenneth Wong, he took advantage of the occasion to launch the Joo Chiat YEC Blog that was greeted by overwhelming enthusiasm from the audience. This day onwards, the YEC has a powerful medium to reach out to the youths.

With precise execution, the adoption of the minutes, youth group report and financial reports were carried out and the dissolution of the 16th Term Joo Chiat CC YEC was completed. Following that, Mr Chan's addressing speech did its magic in inspiring those present. I quote, "I’ve experienced my live two times plus GST compared to most of the youths who were present here. Our lives started with a blank book. It is up to us how we want to write it so that others will want to read it when we are writing our memoirs".

Presiding Chairperson, Ms Low Hui Min, Marilyn introduced the 21 candidates running for the new term with a photo montage, giving a glimpse to the backgrounds, traits, even fun facts of the people who would be leading the Joo Chiat youth community.

Finally, the recital of the PAYM pledge by the new committee marked the end of the BGM. Afterwhich, everybody was treated to a sumptuous dinner buffet before they proceeded to the Night Safari to "count the animals".

16th Term Joo Chiat Youth Executive Committee thanks everyone who had made the event a success in one way or another.

What I’ve learned:

I learned a lot through this volunteer training; the basic knowledge of water reclamation, ways to conserve water and how our Singapore strives to achieve self water-sufficient.

All comes with a story, interesting facts about water. The first day’s training was at marina barrage, it was an eye opener for me, because I’ve never been there before, and the places are really big enough to fascinate me.

They shared with us ways to conserve water and our Singapore one and only water story.

We were also being brought to Kolam Ayer waterfront – a success story of PUB’s ABC Programme (Active, Beautiful and Clean); how they keep the water clean and the improvement they make to engage more people into water sports activities.

NEWater Centre, a must visit place if anybody want to know more about the Singapore’s Water Story - where we were shared on what improvement Singapore has made in water conservation, ways we did to improve the water system in Singapore. If I didn’t attend this training, I wouldn’t know that I was wasting water all along.

They even teach us how to read PUB bills, which frankly speaking, I’ve haven’t really take a closer look on the details of the bill as by normal practice, I will only look at the final figure at the bottom right hand-corner of the bill. However, besides that, a lot of information can be gathered by looking at one’s PUB bills.

After this training, I have more interest in water and I learnt more about the ways to conserve water and make our way to save Singapore’s water.

I’ve volunteered for AYG 2009 as an Accreditation Assistant team leader at the swimming side. The exposure I got was worthwhile.

I was in charge of different areas at different timing. This was suggested by our team leader as to let us learn how to handle different situation at different area. As part of the accreditation team, I was suppose to check for valid passes before allowing people to enter the premises.

It was quite difficult at first, because there was a communication breakdown with the management.People that shouldn’t be there are majorities volunteers themselves. They were to get a sticker tag for themselves in order to enter the field of play. The first day of work, a lot of problem vividly appeared, because we started our duties quite late, so those that come in early are already inside the restricted areas that they shouldn’t be in.

Second day, all the queries were resolved and things carried out smoothly.

It’s quite difficult to be in the accreditation team as at times, we would be challenged (verbally) by people and we need to know how to manage it.

When we are were in the accreditation team, we need to take full responsibility to the area assigned to us and ensure that nobody can get passes us without a pass. Instructions were passed down, without a pass no one can get into the field of play. This also applicable to VVIPs too.

I’m not sure whether this system works, but there were some incidents actually happened when the VVIP were stopped and the, protocol team were not there with them to do the necessary clearance. This actually brought a lot of miscommunication and little unhappiness to the VVIP.

The AYG committee should look into this matter and improve on it if there is a second AYG in the future. And hope they will improve on their efficiency next time.

National Day Dinner

On the 1st of August 2009, the YEC members attended the Joo Chiat National Day Celebration Dinner held at the open field beside Haig Girls’ School. With the Guest-of-Honour Mr. Chan Soo Sen, Member of Parliament for Joo Chiat Constituency and Adviser to Joo Chiat GROs, Grassroot Leaders and residents of the Joo Chiat Constituency, we gathered together to celebrate the Nation’s 44th birthday. Attendees who slowly filled up the tables were dressed in the patriotic colours, red and white.

To start off the celebration, the national anthem was played and everyone stood up and sang with gusto. This was then followed by the reciting of the national pledge, where everyone placed their clenched right fist on the left side of their chest. To our surprise, after the pledge taking, a cake with 44 candles was brought out and we sang a birthday song for Singapore! It was the time where everyone felt the spirit of togetherness and you can sense the patriotism as we unite as “One People, One Nation, One Singapore”.

Continuing the celebration were a string of performance by the different ethnic groups. Living in multi-racial country, we have learnt to appreciate the cultures of the other ethnic groups and to give our strong support to each other. Watching the performance in awe, some of the performances were actually by the Grassroot Leaders!

For me, singing to National Day songs was always the best part of the celebration. Everyone singing to the familiar and meaningful lyrics of the songs just brings a sense of nostalgia for the years of NDP I have watched and seeing how Singapore has progressed over the years.

This was an event to not only celebrate the Nation’s birthday but also a time where the YEC members sat together to interact. To be honest, being in the recently formed committee, there were a couple of us who hardly knew the fellow YEC members. However, after this event, we started to interact and got to know more about one another and see each other’s humorous side.

Overall, this memorable event which gave a sense of belonging that “This is home truly”. Nevertheless, Singaporeans should not display their love for country only during National Day but all year round!

Overview of event:

Photography is a popular hobby and in recent years, has spurred a rapidly growing interest among the youths of today.

In Singapore there is a growing apathy towards Singapore’s political and cultural atmosphere in the youth of the country. Too few of our youth are able to appreciate National icons and symbols with regards to the country’s culture, needless to say appreciating the rich culture in their own constituency.

This project aims to achieve three goals: first, to bring photographers together so as to, dissolve differences and create networks between them: second, to cultivate cultural appreciation through the art of photography: and third, to allow the sharing of ideas and skills among photographers as a community.

This theme was chosen because it combines two important inter-linked elements: Photography and cultural identity. The PAYM Policy Forum Series is one of the PAYM’s key initiatives to engage working youths. The main objective is to create platforms for working youths to gain a better insight of current issues and national policies, such as the rationale, constraints and benefits of implementing the policies and for them to share their perspectives and to generate ideas with regards to these issues and policies.

Overview for the session

From the ‘Keep Singapore Clean’ campaigns in the 1960s to the recent ‘Romancing Singapore’ campaigns, campaigns have almost become synonymous with the Singaporean way of life; this begs the inevitable question “Is Singapore a country of campaigns?”

Campaigns in Singapore have often been one of the means for the government to effect public education among its populace. While some campaigns have borne fruits, for others, success has been elusive. As an example, despites decades of ‘No Littering’ campaigns coupled with fines meted out to ‘litterbugs’, littering still remains a bugbear. This points to the question as to whether public education in the form of campaigns, even with penalties, to promote desirable habits in Singaporeans are effective, or are Singaporeans, intrinsically “creature of habits”? Do campaigns need to be accompanied with incentives too to be effective? If so, how much of an incentive (or disincentive) for campaigns to work? Do incentives and penalties, tied with campaigns detract from the primary goal of education that campaigns should seek to achieve?

Campaigns in Singapore have evolved with the changing times of our society. Gone are the days when campaigns are solely driven by the authorities, these days, we are now witnessing an increasingly ‘bottom-up’ campaigning by Singaporeans. Campaigns have taken on a proactive bent when groups of Singaporeans band together, campaigning for causes like ‘Saving Chek Jawa’ and more recently, the seeking of compensation of distressed financial products.

Today’s youths are leaders of our tomorrow. With a growing breed of internet-savvy young populace, the relevant authorities may need to explore tweaking their campaigns to communicate their messages more effectively to this important group. This is especially so when the internet has taken campaigns to a completely different platform: ‘online’, with the likes of blogs, ‘Facebook’ and other online social networks. Are campaigns still useful in today’s world where information is disseminated at the click of a button? And what role do campaigns play in today’s internet age? There may be a need for campaigns in Singapore to evolve constantly with the changing social trends or should the authorities explore alternatives to campaigns?

Purpose and possible desired outcomes

This Forum will be a platform to gather feedback from youths aged 17 to 35 years old on their perception of campaigns in Singapore and their effectiveness. The Forum also hopes to:

1. Increase awareness and knowledge of participants on the importance of campaigns in Singapore.

2. Explore ways in which the government can communicate campaigns more effectively to the youth.

3. Explore alternatives to campaigns in reaching out to the youth.

In November 2009, I was selected to represent PAYM and Singapore in the PAYM Singapore - Kagoshima Youth Exchange Programme 2009 delegation of 12. This youth exchange programme is an extended invitation by the Kagoshima Prefectural Government to PAYM as part of a continuous nine year collaboration. It aims to promote and strengthen the friendships between the international youth communities and allow for appreciation of the diverse and unique Kagoshima, Japan culture.

In the span of 8 days the itinerary included a two-night home stay experience, participation in the Ohara Festival, educational visits to schooling instituitions and local industries, cultural tours and a courtesy call to Kagoshima Prefectural Government.

The total duration may seem short, but the memories and knowledge I have gained were priceless. The most memorable would have to be the two-night home stay, where I was hosted by a family of three, who made sure that my stay was definitely forty eight hours worth of new experiences. I learned my host family's way of life, from things as mundane as their daily schedules, to more interesting facts like their dietary preferences. We also shared information and knowledge of our own country. My host families just could not believed how small Singapore was.

Through this whole experience, I have not only gained experiences and knowledge that I was never exposed to, I have bridged strong friendships across the borders. I would definitely encourage all youths to never restrict their exploration within the four walls we usually live in.

Objectives of Event

- Providing a platform for cultural exchange between Singapore and Japan
- To allow our local performers to have a chance to interact with foreign performers
- To cultivate a sense of cultural appreciation in our youths.

Overview of event:

On 14 March 2009, Joo Chiat Youth Executive Committee (YEC) will be collaborating with TENKO Japanese Drum Group to organize this event – Community Music Fiesta – Japanese Instrumental Music & Japanese Cultural Fair.

This is the first time that Joo Chiat YEC collaborate with TENKO, with the aim of promoting traditional Japanese music to the younger generation and providing a platform for like-minded youths to exchange their experiences and thoughts.

Participation Details:

Volunteer: 20
Target audience: 200 public

Association for Persons with Special Needs (APSN) has accepted our invitation and will be sending 20 students to take part in the event.

Introduction Workshop to Japanese Musical Instrument (Shakuhachi)

In order to better appreciate the music played using the traditional Japanese musical instruments, a brief workshop will be conducted to share the knowledge with the public and let them know more about these instruments.

Concert and Performance

Highlight of our event, a performance will be put up to showcase to the public about traditional Japanese music.

To make this event more attractive, other Taiko Drumming groups from Kampong Chai Chee, Poverello Teen Centre and Singapore Polytechnic Taiko could be invited to stage a performance too. In addition, the performers will be able to make a chance to interact with foreign friends.

Cultural Fair

Besides having the music aspect of Japan, booths will be set-up to share other Japanese culture such as food, costumes, J-Pop Culture, Japanese Animation, traditional games and many more to attract more crowds.

PAYM Singapore – Hong Kong Youth Exchange Programme 2009

The PAYM constantly engages youths in activities that are relevant to current trends, and enhances youth leaders’ capabilities through training programmes and exposure to overseas youth organizations. To represent the PAYM Central Youth Council in the PAYM Singapore – Hong Kong Exchange Programme 2009 was an experience that I cherish.

Hong Kong has been doing great in terms of engaging youth in doing volunteer work and the establishment of self-initiated Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) to empower the needy and less-fortunate of fellow Hong Kong citizens.

The Hong Kong Government is always keeping abreast in terms of its Social Welfare Scheme to address to the ever-changing social issues faced by the society. Through visits to several NGOs and public agencies, this exchange programme has indeed given a good exposure for the Singapore Delegation on the youth engagement avenues and social welfare schemes in Hong Kong. Here are some the visits I would like to share with you:

Young Night Drifters Centre (YNDC) is one of the many social welfare services by Chinese Young Men’s Christian Association targeting at at-risks youths in Hong Kong. Its primary objective is “to reach out to prominent spots in the streets where young people usually gather at late hours at night” and to provide them with “appropriate, on-the-spot services and prevent them from falling prey to negative elements like triad society, illicit drugs etc.

Its services include casework, community education, and short term intervention including counseling, welfare transferals and referrals. The proactive approach in engaging youth-at-risks by identifying and addressing potential problems before they spiral into serious social problems, YNDC is a good case study on preventive measures pertaining to youth at-risks matters.

“Magic Kingdom” was established as a social enterprise with the initial funding assistance from the Social Welfare Department.

Its aim is to use Magic to equip the youths with skills so that they can perform and sustain themselves by staying employed. The magicians are often being engaged to stage performances for various schools and community performance. “Magic Kingdom” also provides regular training and development programme for their magicians to stay abreast with the latest magic tricks in the market and thus, keeping themselves updated and relevant. I feel that is essential to regularly increase the skills proficiency level of the youths to sustain the social enterprise, and this can be applied to the Singapore context.

Besides the official visits, our trip was also idyllic with recreational visits to Avenue of Stars, Victoria Harbour, taking of Peak Tram to The Peak, Historical tour @ Tai O, Giant Buddha and many more! What makes this trip most meaningful and memorable is the friendship and bond shared with our Hong Kong friends. An overnight camp at Wu Kwai Sha Youth Village and home visits after, we learnt much more of the local community, insights that are above and beyond those we gathered from the official visits.

I would say that this exchange programme has achieved what it aims to do and the friendship bonds will be one of the most valuable take-away for both Singapore and Hong Kong delegates.

PAYM Singapore – Hong Kong Exchange Programme 2009 will be etched in my memories, one of the sweetest moments in my life. Thank you PAYM, Hong Kong Commission on Youth, Hong Kong Home Affairs Bureau and Chinese Young Men’s Christian Association for making this Exchange Programme possible.

-To cultivate compassion values & experience to our youth volunteers.

Overview of event:

This project is propose to held before lunar Chinese new year, the reason is to let disabled and the needy to feel that they are not left out during this important Chinese festival. As most of the needy are living alone so we hope to create a kind of Chinese New Year celebration to them and at the same time to distribute some New Year gifts.

This project is jointly organize by JC YEC and Mobility Aids Repair & Services Centre, the project will be divide 3 parts:

1)Wheelchair Servicing
2)Food Ration Distribution
3)Lunch Session with Old folks

Participation Details:

Volunteer: 10 to 15
Benefit needy: 80 - 100

Proposed activities

Wheelchair servicing

Wheelchair Servicing will be taken care by Mobility Aids Repair & Services Centre, a team of volunteers will also be helping out in wheelchair servicing where skills will be taught to the volunteers on how to repair wheelchairs.

Food Ration Distributing

We will be finding sponsor for food ration. Volunteers are required to pre-pack the food items into different bags and to separate halal food from non- halal. Afterwhich, volunteers will be sending these bags to the needy elderly and families.

Lunch with Old Folks

Besides helping the needy, we believe at the same time our youth volunteer will able to experience in voluntary work and through the lunch session they will be able to interact with the needy and actually understand that how fortunate they are. We hope that this project is able to encourage more youth volunteer to join in voluntary work

PAYM Policy Forum- How Economic Recession Affects Youth

“HOW ECONOMIC RECESSION AFFECTS YOUTH”

The PAYM Policy Forum Series is one of the PAYM’s key initiatives to engage working youths. The main objective is to create platforms for working youths to gain a better insight of current issues and national policies, such as the rationale, constraints and benefits of implementing the policies and for them to share their perspectives and to generate ideas with regards to these issues and policies.

Overview for the session

Faced with their first recession and as the world slips into a full-scale recession, how will youths between 17 to 35 years old cope? Youths need to first understand the gravity of the situation and the consequences of the looming job cuts and slower economy before addressing factors and efforts which may aid them in cushioning the impact of the recession.

As shared by Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew at the Singapore Human Capital Summit, it is important for Singapore citizens to increase their human capabilities and human resources by making use of the time during the economic downtown for skills-upgrading and knowledge-building. This apt reminder comes timely for graduating youths and/or working youths to continue to maintain their competitiveness in the labour force as higher rate of unemployment will top the list of consequences of an economic recession.

Changes in lifestyle may be one of the areas youths might face during the period of recession, besides lowering their aspirations, expectations and consumerism. It is thus more important to prepare youths for the challenging times ahead by re-configuring their mindsets and attitude.

Purpose and possible desired outcomes

This Forum will be a platform to gather feedback from youths aged 17 to 35 years old on the consequences of the economic recession and to explore possible initiatives which will aid in cushioning the impact of the recession.

The Forum also hopes to:

1. Increase awareness and knowledge of participants with respect to economic policies which are already in place;

2. Solicit participants’ views and concerns on challenges faced by youths in times of economy crisis;

3. Explore efforts which the government, companies and individuals may adopt in cushioning the impact of the recession on the youth population; and

4. Address factors on staying competitive in the workforce in the current economic climate.

Understanding Basic Photography Workshop

Event Name: UNDERSTANDING BASIC PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

OBJECTIVES:

1. This workshop is intended for the amateurs and beginner photographer. Targeting the youths.

2. It introduces the digital camera and helps each participant to acquire the basic techniques and fundamentals in taking good photographs on a consistent basis.

3. The workshop allows participants to increase their awareness and appreciation towards photography, with the aim to develop and cultivate their interest in the field.

4. It provides opportunities for the like-minded photographers to come together and share their concerns, experience and problems in photography.

5. The workshop serves as a stepping stone to the possible conduct of an intermediate photography workshop in future.
